Primary Wing of the G.D. Goenka School at Siliguri

We had been commissioned by the School to prepare a proposal for a large multipurpose hall for the G.D. Goenka school in Siliguri. While working on it, our scope was increased to also preparing a proposal for the Primary Wing as well. There was a small plot of land identified, adjacent to the main school building.

We prepared a simple linear proposal with a small play area between the main building and the proposed. A long and wide corridor connected all the classrooms and ancillary functions.

The classrooms were designed with a high roof and ceiling in order to accommodate a mezzanine – with the idea that the spatial experience of learning could be enriched and enhanced.  These classrooms opened out onto another open area in the rear that could be converted into a swimming pool for children.

Concept

The design for the proposal started out with a doodle on a smartphone with a stylus. This sketch was developed into drawings leading to the final construction of the building.

The design was based on the principle of a series of parallel walls which defined the classrooms as well as the structural elements for the building. The simple organisation principle created opportunities for a lot of freedom in which to order the different requirements for the classrooms for different age children.
